Home > Insights > How to Assess the Quality of Wooden Pallets Before Purchase

At a glance:
● Look for cracks, loose nails and missing parts in wooden pallets to ensure durability and safety.
● Check moisture content below 22% to prevent mould growth and structural weakening.
● Look for ISPM 15 certification and IPPC stamps to confirm pest protection and export compliance.
● Test load capacity, as high-quality pallets can support up to 2000 kg depending on the material.
● Choose reputable suppliers with certifications and strong quality control measures, like Waterstone Holdings.

You rely on wooden pallets to keep your supply chain moving smoothly, but what if they’re actually working against you?

With the rise of weak, used and degraded wooden pallets, it’s easier than ever to end up with a product that can lead to damaged goods, costly delays, and even workplace accidents.

But don’t worry! Before you make your next purchase, here’s a simple way to assess pallet quality to make sure you’re investing in the right ones.

How to Assess the Quality of Wooden Pallets Before Purchase

There are a few simple yet effective ways to ensure you’re getting durable, high-quality pallets. From hands-on inspections to checking certifications, we have eight different ways to assess pallet quality. If you’re ready, let’s get started!

Visual Inspection

Even a minor defect can affect their durability and performance. So, firstly, carefully check the physical condition of your wooden pallets to make sure they are safe to use. You do not want to invest in a damaged piece. Here are the common signs to look for before purchasing.

● Check cracks, breaks, excessive splitting, or decayed parts in the wooden pallet.
● Are the nails or screws securely in place? They shouldn’t be loose as it can weaken the pallet.
● Verify that the boards are properly aligned.
● Does the pallet have any unusual stains? It can pose a risk of contamination if you’re using it for pharmaceutical or food purposes.
● Finally, see if there’s a missing piece.

Check Moisture Content

Next, it’s important to assess the moisture content of wood because it impacts the overall quality, durability, and usability. High moisture content often encourages mould growth and decay, which can pose health risks and weaken the pallet.

To measure the moisture content, use the pin-type or pinless moisture meter. Usually, the content should be below 22% to prevent mould formation.

Spot the Warning Signs of Mould

Regardless of the quality, mould can grow due to species of wood humidity, moisture content, transportation and even storage conditions. Mouldy pallets can pose serious health and safety risks, especially if they’re used in industries like food and medicine.

So, before purchasing, carefully look for warning signs like a green, black, or white fuzzy spot on the board. Similarly, slimy surfaces, visible spores, and musty odour are also indicators of mould growth.

If you’re unsure, you can always request documentation to confirm that the pallets have been stored in mould-free conditions.

Protected from Pests

Woods are naturally susceptible to pest infestations, particularly larvae of xylophagous insects. In Australia, wooden pallets used for international trade must comply with the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No.15 (ISPM 15) to prevent the spread of pests. It requires the manufacturers to make pallets from debarked wood and use approved pallet heat treatment (HT) or methyl bromide fumigation (MB) to eliminate pests.

Look for the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) stamp, which includes a country code, certification number, and treatment code (HT for heat-treated or MB for methyl bromide fumigation). This certification ensures the pallet has been properly treated and is free from pests. Our Waterstone Holdings’ wooden pallets are heat-treated and ISPM-certified.

Additionally, you can check for sawdust residue, holes, or larvae that indicate an infestation.

Test Load Capacity for Strength

A high-quality wooden pallet should be strong, durable, and capable of handling its intended load capacity. Usually, Australian Standard Pallets measure 1165 x 1165 mm and can support weights ranging from 500 kg to 2000 kg, depending on the condition.

If you’re handling heavy loads, hardwood pallets (such as oak or maple) offer superior durability compared to softwoods like pine.

Similarly, some businesses also rely on NATA-certified testing to ensure compliance with Australian Standard AS4068, which emphasises structural integrity and safety.

Check for Certifications and Compliance

Reliable suppliers meet industry standards and hold relevant certifications. A high-quality wooden pallet supplier should have the following:

● ISPM 15 certification for pest protection.
● Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification that verifies that the wood is sustainably sourced.
● HT (Heat Treatment) stamps that confirm the wood has been treated to prevent infestations.

Consider Price vs. Long-Term Value

Next, evaluate the price and value of wooden pallets. High-quality hardwood pallets are usually more expensive, but they provide long-term value by lowering the need for regular repairs and replacements.

When you choose FSC-certified pallets that ensure sustainable sourcing, it shows your commitment to environmentally responsible business practices. Plus, in terms of value, you need to consider other factors like moisture content, structural integrity, and compliance with ISPM 15 standards for international shipping too. In the end, investing in quality pallets today means fewer headaches, greater efficiency, and cost savings down the road.

Supplier’s Reputation and Quality Control

A supplier’s reputation can tell a lot about the quality of the wooden pallet. Before making a purchase, you can ask for customer testimonials or look for online reviews to learn about them. It’s also a good idea to understand the quality control practices your suppliers are using. Some good suppliers often provide guarantees for defective pieces.

Avoid These Types of Wooden Pallet

When making a purchase, make sure to avoid these wooden pallets as they might not be safe.

● Damaged, broken, or loose nail pallets at all costs.
● Wooden pallets with MB (Methyl Bromide) stamps are chemically treated and considered toxic for pharmaceuticals or food.
● Contaminated pallets with unusual stains or chemical smell.
● Overused or repaired wooden pallets as they may lack durability.
